South Korean activists call for Global Week of Action
Against Roche for withholding lifesaving AIDS drug

New York, NY – Roche Inc., producer of lifesaving AIDS drug, Fuzeon, is withholding it from South Korea, denying access to AIDS patients in critical need. Despite the Korean Ministry of Health willing to purchase Fuzeon—a necessary drug in cases of treatment failure—for US$ 18,000 per patient per year, Roche is greedily and shameless taking advantage of its monopoly by demanding US$ 22,000 per patient per year. Roche’s US$ 22,000 extreme price tag is the same in the US, despite South Korea’s GDP being less than 50% of the US GDP.
뉴욕, - 로슈는 AIDS약인 푸제온을 생산하는데, 이들은 한국에서 그 약을 판매보류하여 필요한 환자들의 접근을 거부하고 있다. 한국 복지부는 연간 18,000달러에 푸제온을 구매하려고 했지만 로슈는 탐욕스럽고 치욕스럽게도 환자당 연간 22,000달러를 요구하며 독점을 이용하고 있다. 한국은 미국 GDP의 반에도 미치지 못하고 있는데도 로슈가 요구한 22,000달러는 미국과 같은 약값이다.
As a result, Korean patients and activists are calling for a “Global Week of Action Against Roche” starting October 1st, demanding Roche to stop abusing their power by threatening HIV patients’ lives. In New York City, activists are building a graveyard outside Roche’s advertising agency, complete with a die-in and the “Grim Roche-r,” an effigy of Roche CEO George Abercrombie, demanding they advertise the truth of predatory pricing of Fuzeon. In Arizona, activists will build a similar graveyard outside a Roche office. They are being joined worldwide by activists in South Korea, France, Thailand, Morocco, and Switzerland.
따라서 한국의 환자와 활동가들은 10월 1일부터 시작해서 "Global week of action against Roche"를 호소하면서, 로슈가 HIV환자들을 위협하면서 자신들의 힘을 남용하는 것을 그만두라고 요구하고 있다. 뉴욕시에서도 활동가들이 로슈의 광고 대행사 바깥쪽에 묘지를 만들어, 다이인과 "냉혹한 로셔"(아베크롬비 인형의 이름인 듯), 로슈의 CEO인 조지 아베크롬비의 인형을 만들어서, 그들이 푸제온의 탐욕적 가격메기기의 진실을 광고해 줄 것을 요구할 것이다. 아리조나에서도 활동가들이 같은 묘지를 로슈지사 바깥에 만들 것이다. 이것은 한국, 프랑스, 태국, 모로코, 스위스의 활동가들에 의한 전 세계적 활동의 일환이다.
“Roche is making a killing on Fuzeon in the US. They can afford to make their lifesaving medication affordable to people in South Korea. People living with HIV in the United States are standing strong with our sisters and brothers in South Korea. The rich executives at Roche can not be allowed to decide who lives and who dies”, said Kaytee Riek from Health GAP.
"로슈는 미국에서 푸제온으로 살인하고 있다. 그들은 자신의 약을 한국사람들이 이용할 수 있도록 할 수 있다. 미국에서 HIV환자들은 남한의 우리 형제 자매들을 강하게 지지하고 있다. 로슈의 부자 대표이사는 누가 죽고 누가 살지를 결정할 권한이 없다."고 Health GAP의 Kaytee Riek이 언급했다.
A marketing director for Roche Korea declared in a news interview that Roche will not supply Fuzeon to any developing country including South Korea—despite the drug being needed most in these countries where AIDS is epidemic—because these countries have no ability to pay Roche’s arbitrary pricing. Moreover, on July 3rd meeting with HIV activists, the president of Roche Korea, Mr. Urs Flueckiger added, “We do not do business for saving lives, but for making money. Saving lives is none of our business.”
로슈코리아의 마케팅 이사는 뉴스인터뷰에서 로슈는 푸제온을 한국을 포함한 개도국에 공급하지 않을 것이라고 말했다-비록 그 약이 이러한 나라에서 가장 필요할지라도-왜냐하면 이러한 나라들은 로슈가 정하는 가격을 지불할 능력이 없기 때문이다. 더군다나 7월 3일의 HIV활동가들과의 회의에서 로슈코리아의 사장인 울스 푸루어키커가 덧붙였다. "생명을 살리는 것은 우리의 관심이 아니고, 돈을 버는 것이 관심이다."
While patients in South Korea and other developing countries die without access to this drug, Roche’s inhuman profiteering netted US$ 266.8 million last year in Fuzeon sales. Such dangerous corporate greed comes on the heels of Roche’s announcement in July that it has suspended HIV/AIDS research altogether for purely profit-based motivations.
남한의 환자들과 다른 개발도상국가들이 이 약에 접근할 수 없는 와중에 작년 로슈의 잔인한 순 이윤은 2억 6천 6백 8십만 달러였다. 이러한 위험한 탐욕은 7월, 순전히 이윤기반 동기 때문에 HIV/AIDS연구를 완전히 유예한다고 발표한 것의 바로 뒤를 이어서 나온 것이다.
In addition to sanctioning Roche’s aggressively greedy pricing, activists around the world are calling on South Korea to issue a compulsory license, allowing affordable, governmental, non-profit production of Fuzeon while offering Roche adequate royalty payments.
로슈의 공격적인 탐욕적 가격을 중지시킴과 더불어 전세계의 활동가들은 남한이 강제실시를 발행하여 푸제온을 이용할 수 있는, 정부의, 비영리적 생산을 할 수 있도록 요구한다.
